You've just bought your new Tata Nexon, Punch, Harrier, or Curvv. It's sitting in your parking lot looking pristine. You're excited. You're also probably wondering: when do I bring it in for the first free service, and what exactly happens when I do?
We've done thousands of first services here at Gurudev Tata's workshop in Arumbakkam. This guide walks you through what happens, minute by minute, so you know what to expect and can plan accordingly.
When Should You Come for First Service?
This is the first question we hear, and the answer is important: after 1,000 km or 30 days of purchase, whichever comes first.
Why this timing? The engine and gearbox are bedding in. Tiny metal particles (perfectly normal) circulate in the oil. The first service drains these particles out so they don't wear the engine prematurely. Tata's warranty covers this first service for free, but only if you complete it within the timeline.
Pro tip: Many customers procrastinate and hit 35–40 days. That's fine, your warranty is still valid. But don't wait until 2,000 km. We've seen customers at 1,500 km thinking the first service doesn't matter much. It does.
Book your appointment at least 3–4 days in advance. Our workshop gets busy on weekends and Friday evenings (when people get off work). Tuesday or Wednesday morning is your smoothest experience.
What Happens When You Arrive
Check-In
You hand over your keys and documentation. We ask for your vehicle registration card (RC), insurance policy, and service booklet. Our counter team confirms it's the first service and updates your service history in our system.
This takes 5 minutes. You'll be offered tea or coffee while you wait. Many customers choose to sit in our lounge, watch their car being worked on through the glass, or leave and come back (we SMS you when it's ready).
Pre-Service Inspection
The mechanic does a walk-around. He checks:
- Tire tread and pressure (sometimes needs adjustment)
- Lights and wipers
- Any unusual noise or vibration you've reported
- External damage or issues from first month of ownership
If there's anything unusual (say, a rattling door), he notes it now and can address it as part of the service.
Oil and Filter Change
The car goes on the lift. The oil drain plug is removed, old oil flows out into a collection tank. This is where those metal particles go — they're in the old oil. A new oil filter is installed, and fresh Tata-recommended synthetic oil is poured in.
This is the core of the first service. The oil smell in the workshop? That's normal. Everything is handled safely and disposed of properly.
Fluid Level Checks & Top-Ups
Our mechanic checks:
- Coolant level (usually fine, no top-up needed on first service)
- Brake fluid level (checked but rarely needs change at first service)
- Windshield washer fluid (topped up if low)
For electric vehicles, we also check the coolant for the battery thermal management system.
Undercarriage Check
While the car is on the lift, we do a thorough undercarriage inspection:
- Check for leaks (oil, coolant, brake fluid)
- Inspect suspension components for wear
- Look at brake pads for thickness (usually won't need replacement at 1,000 km)
- Check if any protective covers or shields are loose
First service owners rarely need repairs here — it's mostly inspection. But if something was damaged in the first month (maybe a speed bump impact), we catch it now.
Software Check & Updates
We connect the car to a diagnostic computer. This reads the engine management system, checks for any stored error codes (usually none at first service), and installs any available software updates from Tata.
Updates are usually small — safety patches, improved diagnostics, sometimes fuel mapping tweaks. Takes about 15 minutes. Your car software stays current.
Engine Start & Road Test
The car comes down from the lift. Engine is started, and we listen for anything unusual. Then one of our experienced technicians takes it for a 10-minute road test — around the Arumbakkam area, through some traffic, acceleration, braking. This confirms everything is working smoothly after the service.
You'll get a call: "Your car is ready."
Handover & Documentation
The car is cleaned (inside and outside). Keys, RC, and service booklet are handed back. We give you a detailed service report showing:
- What was done (oil type, filter part number)
- Inspection findings
- Next service schedule
- Any recommendations for future maintenance
The entire first service takes roughly 3 hours. You come back, your car is clean and serviced.

What About the Cost? (It's Free, But...)
The first service is completely free — parts (oil, filter), labour, diagnostics. Tata Motors covers it.
However, if the inspection finds something that needs repair (say, a loose cover or a minor issue), that repair costs extra. Most first service cars have zero additional repairs. It's rare to hit anything that costs money at 1,000 km. But if your car was in a minor accident or you hit something hard, repairs become necessary and we'll tell you upfront with a quote.
Pro Tip
If you're worried about unexpected costs, mention any incidents when you drop off the car. We'll do a thorough check and can pre-estimate any repairs before we start the service.
Common Questions We Get Asked
Can I stay in the workshop while you service it?
Absolutely. We have a glass-paneled lounge where you can watch the work happen. Many customers love this. It's interesting to see what actually happens under the hood.
What if I find a fault during service? Is warranty affected?
No. Finding a fault during service is what the first service is for. If there's a manufacturing defect (extremely rare), your warranty covers the repair 100%. You pay nothing.
Do I need to book ahead, or can I just walk in?
Booking ahead is strongly recommended. Our workshop is busiest Tuesday to Friday. Walk-ins are welcome, but you might wait 4–6 hours. With a booking, you know the exact time slot.
What happens at the second service? Is that free too?
The second service is at 10,000 km and costs roughly ₹2,500–3,500 depending on your model. It's a shorter service than the first one (no deep undercarriage inspection). After that, every 10,000 km service is similar cost.
Should I change the air filter at first service?
Not usually. Air filters last much longer than 1,000 km. We visually inspect it and advise replacement around 20,000–30,000 km depending on driving conditions (more frequently in dusty areas). At first service, it's usually fine.
Will the service affect my warranty?
Absolutely not. In fact, regular servicing as per Tata's schedule is required to maintain your warranty. Missing services voids it. First service is covered as part of your purchase, so it actually protects your warranty.
I've seen online complaints about Tata services. Should I be worried?
Online reviews are usually extreme — either very happy or very unhappy. We take every concern seriously. Our team at Gurudev Tata is trained on the exact service procedures, we use genuine parts, and we document everything. If you have an issue, you can escalate it to Tata Motors directly, and we'll cooperate fully.
After the First Service: What's Next?
Your service booklet will have a recommended service schedule. For most Tata cars, it's:
- 1,000 km: First free service (done)
- 10,000 km: Second service (paid, ~₹2,500–3,500)
- Every 10,000 km thereafter: Regular service (same cost as 10,000 km)
Some newer Tata models have extended service intervals (15,000 km). Check your service booklet for your specific car.
Between services, keep an eye on oil level, tire pressure, and any warning lights on the dashboard. If a warning light comes on, bring the car in immediately (we'll diagnose at no charge).
